REUSABLE COFFEE CUPS: HUSKEE, FRANK GREEN, FRESSKO

We love all coffee keep cups, they create less wastage to keep our earth beautiful! Not to mention our hunt for the best reusable coffee cup.

The media has finally locked onto the negative contribution of millions of used disposable coffee cups into landfill every year. This has resulted in a massive shift to the purchase of travel mugs as they have so many benefits including: dishwasher safe, leak proof, spill proof, some having a vacuum seal and the ability to carry hot or cold liquid.

We all want to do better by our amazing planet. We know how bad single-use coffee cups, water bottles and plastics are for the environment. We’re also passionate about something well-designed, stylish, and really convenient.

Reusable cups are currently trending which is great news for decreasing contribution to landfill.

Reusable cups are made of either chemical free plastic, glass, stainless steel and even coffee husk. These reusable cups and reusable mugs are a healthy choice for you and the beneficial choice to a sustainable environmental.

We love and carry the Frank Green Cup, Sol Cups, Fressko Cup, Kinto Cup, Sttoke Cup and the Huskee Cup. The Huskee has taken a revolutionary approach and features coffee husk as a raw material, which is both sophisticated and sustainable. Many of the reusable coffee cups have unique thermal properties will keep your coffee hotter for longer.

The love of the environment may not be on everyones front of mind. However, all these cups are so beautiful that apart from helping the world, they make awesome gifts and perfect instagram props. These functional coffee products are both good for the environment and make sustainable living fun!

Most Paper Cups are not made from Paper alone.

Ok so you have just walked to your favourite café and picked up a takeaway coffee. You get given your coffee in a paper cup that’s got the sustainable written all over it and you feel confident to recycle it. Right? Wrong.

As we mentioned in our article above, paper cups you get when you order a takeaway coffee aren’t just paper. To prevent leakage, they are lined with polyethylene, and this is what makes them non-recyclable. Along with the cup, lids are not generally recyclable either. It is estimated that 5 billion disposable cups end up in landfill a year, that’s 1 million cups per minute, every hour of every day.

Reusable cups are a lifestyle product and may not be the entire solution, but they are much closer than your average take away cup and it is something simple that we can all do.

What are reusable coffee cups made from?

Although you may find some coffee keep cup designs and styles still include a silicon band or a plastic lid, it is important to remember that a keep cup gets used in replacement of a new paper cup every coffee. You may have hundreds of coffee within one coffee keep cup. Just think, that’s hundreds of cups into landfill, and that’s just from one person! Imagine multiplying that by all coffee drinkers on earth…

Different materials may include glass, bamboo, ceramic, stainless steel, recycled plastics, bioplastics and plastic hybrids. Plastic hybrids have also become popular. It is a mix between plastics and plant fibres such as rice or coffee husks.

Are reusable coffee cups good the environment?

This isn’t a scientific article; however, we can make the simple observation that when you replace your needs for a single use cup for every cup of coffee you consume, you will dramatically decrease the impact you make to landfill every year.

Take this fact for example. After only 15 uses, reusable cups begin to pay for themselves in an environmental sense. This means you’ll be saving more trees, water and energy than what you would have if you chose single use. Most reusable cups last at least 3 years, which at one coffee a day is equal to 1095 disposable cups or 3kg to landfill.

When you choose to purchase and use a reusable cup, you take a stand against the single-use mentality. This small change in your life will have a huge collective effect down the track.

As we know by now, there’s a little more to brewing coffee than just putting a coffee capsule into a machine and hitting a button, well for a quality cup of coffee anyway. All of our accessories are meant to complement and significantly enhance your brewing experience and ability! Usually, you’d begin your espresso process by using a Dosing tool to weigh the appropriate amount of beans with your Coffee Scales before grinding your fresh coffee!

Your coffee grounds will be put back into your dosing cup and transferred into your Portafilter Basket which may be a single, double or triple! The Distribution tool will help you to evenly distribute the grounds within the Filter Basket prior to using a coffee tamper to compress the grounds. By placing your portafilter onto a Tamping Mat you’ll prevent damage to the portafilter handle or bench, simply place 10-30kg of even pressure down on the tamper and twist to polish. Lock the portafilter into your machine, use the scales under the spout with whichever cup, glassware or reusable cup you prefer and commence brewing.

Now when texturing milk it's important to use the correctly sized milk jug for the amount of milk you require. Once you texture the milk, use a milk Thermometer to get the ideal steaming time for whatever milk you’re working with and if in a cafe you might have the option of a Milk Jug Rinser which is incredibly convenient for the post brew clean! A chocolate shaker is a must for those mocha or cappuccino lovers. When the shot is pouring, make sure to use a barista timer or your scales to measure for the perfect extraction, we recommend 23g in and 46g out at an extraction time of 25-30 seconds. Knock the puck out in either a Knock Box at home or a Standing knock tube or in bench shoot if you’re in a cafe!
